Wilson has blended H.P. Lovecraft's dark vision with his own revolutionary philosophy and unique narrative powers to produce a stunning, high-tension story of vaulting imagination. A professor makes a horrifying discovery while excavating a sinister archeological site. For over 200 years, mind parasites have been lurking in the deepest layers of human consciousness, feeding on human life force and steadily gaining a foothold on the planet. Now they threaten humanity's extinction. They can be fought with one weapon only: the mind, pushed to-and beyond-its limits. Pushed so far that humans ...

""Man is a continent, but his conscious mind is no larger than a back garden".
"I came to realize how much of "success" in the world is due to a mere habit of agressiveness and hard work, and not at all to intelligence".
"Man is lazy by nature, and laziness is by no means to be condemned. It means he dislikes inconvenience, and he has created civilization to escape inconvinience; so his laziness has been an important factor in his evolution. But this also means that he prefers to evolve at his own slow and deliberate rate"."
"The science in this book is terribly and embarrassingly wrong. But if you can manage to ignore that, the story contains some interesting philosophical, spiritual, and metaphysical concepts worth exploring. It is tempting to consider the premise of the book as a literal possibility, which is entertaining in itself. But if taken metaphorically, I think it presents a very interesting take on the psyche; Not one with which I fully agree, but one which can be inspiring nonetheless."
"I am a fan of Colin Wilson's work, and admire his fight against existential despair. However, this format was the wrong vehicle to deliver that message.
While I enjoyed his tribute to the Lovecraftian style and mythos, there was a little too much cheesy sci-fi jargon mixed in. Talk of 'energy units' and 'power units' tend to distract.
If you are a Wilson reader, you might as well check it out to see where he was at early on in his career. Otherwise, just read _The Outsider_ and go from there."
"This was a book left to me by my grandpa, god I wish now that I had gotten to know him. This is a mythos book that truly reads like how I think a Cthulhu mythos book should. I look forward to finding this in the many boxes and giving it a reread, if memory serves, it was engrossing enough to compell me to finish it in a couple nights."
