About this title: A very old man and a very old woman live in a tidy little house that is surrounded by flowers. They should be happy, but they aren't because they are lonely. Hoping to cure this dilemma, the very old man goes off in search of a "sweet little fluffy cat" to keep him and his wife company. The very old man climbs hill after hill, and finally comes to a hill covered with felines. Unable to select just one, the very old man ends up bringing all the cats back home with him. However, as his wife points out, they don't have the means to care for so many pets--they can only keep one. When the very old ...

"I walked into the library today and this was on the display shelf. I'd remembered loving it back in the "dark ages" when my kindergarten teacher read it to the class. "Millions and Billions and Trillions of Cats" Maybe it was a form of hypnotic suggestion and that's why I have this collection of animals!"
"Another cute book that also had a nice message. For a while, I was worried because the Very Old Man kept searching for the "most beautiful cat." But it turned out just right, with just the right message for kids and adults. And it was fun to repeatedly read about "hundreds, thousands, millions, billions, trillions of cats.""
"When a very old man promises to find a cat for his wife, he finds so many that trouble ensues.
The text looks handwritten, and the black-and-white drawings are intricately sketched. Thick and thin lines are crosshatched to create everything from meadows to millions and billions of cats' fur. The book is longer than it is wide, which makes the sweeping landscapes seem wider and more picturesque. The end pages at the front and back of the book include more intricate designs and pictures of cats. While it might have been nice to see some of these images in color, even in black and white, the detailed, fairy tale-type drawings are impressive.
The vanity vs. humility lesson is very apparent, but not overbearing. While not entirely in rhyme, the text is still lyrical, making for a great read aloud ("Hundreds of cats, thousands of cats, millions and billions and trillions of cats"). The fairy tale element is further enforced by the "threes" in the plot: the old man takes the cats to a pond, which they drink up; a grassy hill, which they eat up; and finally back home, where the big argument takes place. The story is simple yet universal, and the style in which it's told will appeal to young readers."
"This is an old, silly story that is much like a folktale. The old man brings home lots of cats for his wife (hundreds and thousands and millions and billions and trillions). The narrative is fairly repetitive and the font and illustrations are all in black and white, like wood block prints. It's a fun story to read aloud."
