About this title: In "The Militant South, 1800-1861", John Hope Franklin identifies the factors and causes of the South's festering propensity for aggression that contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. Franklin asserts that the South was dominated by militant white men who resorted to violence in the face of social, personal, or political conflict. Fueled by their defense of slavery and a persistent desire to keep the North out of their affairs, Southerners adopted a vicious bellicosity that intensified as war drew nearer. Drawing from Southern newspapers, government archives, memoirs, letters, ...

"John Hope Franklin's "The Militant South" ranks among one of my favorite books about the South. In this fascinating book, Franklin asserts that violence was woven into the most fundamental aspects of southern life. Up to the Civil War, many areas of the South could be classified as frontier regions. Because of this, as well as the proximity of Native Americans, the presence of fugitive slaves, and the fear of slave revolts, southerners were compelled to develop techniques (the use of knives, pistols, and slave patrols) for their protection. Also, southerners were sensitive about their honor and frequently resorted to dueling if their honor was insulted. Finally, the South had a distinct interest in military education as evidenced by the opening of numerous military schools during the first half of the nineteenth century. In short, "The Militant South" is a lucid and engrossing account of an important region and time period in American history."
