"Excellent. Several of the breeders we researched recommended this book to read before bringing a puppy home. It was easy to read and informative. Also interesting to get a peek into the workings of a monastery. Nonfiction can sometimes be dry. This book has personality."
"This is a fantastic book for anyone thinking of getting a puppy. Read it BEFORE you start looking for a fur face to add to your family, and read it again when you bring your little cutie home. I loved it! Easy to read and VERY accurate. Some of the techniques in here worked by the 2nd or 3rd try! I'm really looking forward to reading their other book "Being Your Dog's Best Friend.""
"I really enjoyed this book and thought it gave some great information on raising a dog. I thought the first half would be boring as it's all about the development of a puppy from the first moment it's born, but it was fascinating. I enjoyed reading the personal stories of dogs the monks have trained. Much better than some of the dog training books I've read."
"This is an excellent book on raising and training a puppy! It is written with the idea that training should be done in a gentle, kind manner but nevertheless with authority. It recognizes that dogs are individuals and that you must fit your trainin to your puppy's individual character. You must learn to read the character of your dog. Temperament testing is discussed. Brutal, hard punishment is not necessary to train a dog. Nevertheless, you must remain the alpha figure. You are the boss, not your dog, but be a reasonable boss temembering that the goal is to achieve a well mannered, loving pet. That is the basic principle. What is remarkable is that the book clearly, through the text AND pictures, gives practical advice on how to achieve this. The pictures are very important, since sometimes it is hard to completely understand just through text. This book is in that respect better than the monks' firt book which lacks illustrations and photos. How does an aggressive versus submissive dog look? What are the positions of the tail, lips, ears, paws and body? What the body of the dog is telling us is clearly illustrated. How to correctly put on a choke collar is both illustrated and clearly described in words. (A choke collar is NOT meant to choke. It must be properly used!) There are precise exercises carefully depicted that explain how to train, step by step. I have had many, many dogs. Although I started the book having the same philosophy as the authors', I finished the book, through the illustrated and clearly depicted exercises, better able to to train my new puppy Oscar. The little 6.5 week old cutie has two pictures on my profile. Of course the pictures of Skye remain there too. I know I will love Oscar, I already do after being with him 3 times, and I will always love Skye who died at a ripe old age of more than 13 years. Really, I highly recommend this book. Any dog owner can always learn more. Even if you know everything, read this book BEFORE you get your next puppy. As Oscar matures, I intend to go back to it and follow also the additional exercises aimed for older dogs.
I bought this book more than 10 years ago for my daughter - who was getting a puppy. I have never read it before. Soon I will be getting our new puppy, a black curly coated retriever just like Skye who died in the middle of March. I wont be whole until I can share my life with another dog. Oscar will arrive in a week, if all goes as planned. I am so excited and so I have to read dog books. My husband is currently reading this book, and then I will dig in. We can both always learn more. Heavens it has been a long time since I house trained a puppy. Life will be hectic, to say the least! This book has interesting info on temperament testing of puppies. I AM SO EXCITED. I will soon post a picture of Oscar on my profile! The puppies are so dam cute. I know, I know, ALL puppies are cute."
