"It contains the real life stories of mathematical geniuses. Some knew kings and queens, others lived quietly. Some were famous in their time, some remained obscure until after their deaths. Some died young and tragically, others lived perhaps too long. This really helps put a face with mathematics. It should really get the students interested on the history and answer the question of "who would ever think of this?!?""
"As history, this book should be taken with some salt. As a book about mathematical characters and the character of mathematics, though, I think Men of Mathematics is hard to beat. I first read this when I was in middle school or high school, and while it wasn't the only thing that got me into mathematics, it was certainly an influence."
"Wow. Wow. And Wow. What an epic. This is what those in the know like to call a "good" book.
Reading about the theories, lives, loves, losses, assertions, and positions, made by all of these mathematical frontliners was thrilling. Who knew so many of them were so deeply religious, or tied to Napolean, or married to women a third their age. E.T. Bell's writing style ebulliantly latches onto both the methods and the men. It's refreshing that Bell cares just as deeply about his subject matter as he does the telling of the stories. Much like the men explored in the book, each with their own personal style and personal interests, Bell uses his literary bend to form each of their lives and discoveries into a highly readable account. I can't pretend I understood everything in the book, but I did enjoy trying to. Learning where and WHEN these men were when they developed their contributions to Mathematica (sometimes less than easily, painfully even), should be facinating to anyone interested in social, political, or scientific history.
However, all throughout Bell's overly-complete Bible of Mathematical patriarchs, I couldn't help hearing the faint and frustrated shouts of Sophe Germain, Madame Currie, and all these men's wives and mothers shouting "Oh? Got there on your own, did ya?!""
