"Men at Arms finds political correctness overtaking the City Watch and Captain Vimes less than enthusiastic about his forthcoming retirement. But after all, when a man weds a Lady, even the earthy and honest Lady Sybil Ramkin, Society has certain expectations. For one thing, he certainly cannot continue to spend his evenings pounding the cobbles of Ankh-Morpork like any common man of the Watch. Besides, Corporal Carrot is turning into a real leader of men--and women, and dwarfs, and trolls, and werewolves, as the Watch reluctantly mounts the PC bandwagon and hires on more recruits to better "reflect the ethnic makeup of the city." But the theft of a mysterious weapon from the Assassins' Guild followed by a string of bizarre murders just might force Captain Vimes to postpone his retirement; with civil war brewing and more murders a distinct possibility, it's up to Vimes, the charismatic Carrot, and the rest of their diverse Watch to bring the villains to justice."
"The British humor continues as any next installment from Jasper Fforde is absent from the literary scene.
Sometimes people just automatically defer to others. It's as if before any tangible assessment can be made about the merit of an individual they automatically fall into a category of a 'leader'.
Here were go with Corporal Carrot - a 6 foot tall dwarf (he was adopted, but in all aspects raised a dwarf: even a dwarves don't dispute this) of the Night Watch in the fair city of Ankh-Morpork. Killings crop up and a new weapon called a 'gonne' is found to be the culprit. Where did it come from, and who's doing the killing? The night watch, under the command of soon-to-be-married & retired, Captain Vimes, tries to uncover the killer while dealing with a under a new policy of equality to the force. A troll, dwarf, and a female werewolf are the new recruits. They quickly find out holding an office in the Night Watch supersedes race, color, sex, or the undead.
Who's the killer? A member of the assassin's guild, or perhaps the Fool's guild next door?
Will the culprit be found before the trolls and dwarves destroy the city?

"Rereading a Pratchett book is like curling up with a cup of my favorite tea on a cold evening; it's comfortable and familiar and simply delightful. My then-boyfriend-now-husband convinced me to give Pratchett a try when I was in high school, and at this point I believe I have read all of his Discworld novels (and several other novels as well). However, it's been so long now since I first read most of them that I am almost guaranteed to find something new. I had forgotten how much I enjoy the guard books, and I'm glad I went back to Men at Arms instead of one of his more-familiar novels. Next up is Feet of Clay, just because I want more Vimes!"
