"In this book, Marcus Borg reviews recent research on the historicity of Jesus and his message for the modern world. The book is really more of a series of essays, very readable even for readers who otherwise are not familiar with modern biblical scholarship. This book evidently has been very popular, as over 250,000 copies have been sold.
However, I found it only moderately interesting, perhaps for the reason that it is so informal that it is not very informative. I would much prefer a more detailed analysis -- with numerous specific examples -- along the line of some of Bart Ehrman's recent books.
Thus I was disappointed. But other readers might like it."
"I am always on the outlook for books that enrich my spiritual life. This book provided me with some fresh new perspectives which have enhanced my relationship with Jesus.
What I especially liked about the author, who is a theologian, is how he described his own struggles with his faith as a part of his spiritual journey toward truth. This is a book for someone who wants to place Christian dogma and theology in perspective. It helps paint a personal picture of Jesus, the man.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has read Deepak Chopra's "The Third Jesus." It would be a good companion piece. The difference between the two books is that Marcus Borg has the theological background.
Let's face it, the Christian religion has been molded over the years in such a manner that many of Jesus' original teachings have necessarily become tainted. I am someone who left the Christian church in order to search for truth through other spiritual traditions. Consequently, I appreciate anyone who uses an open mind in order to search for the meaning that Jesus brought to this world. I have since reclaimed Christianity as the basis for my beliefs, though I believe that all religions and practices that enhance the soul are equally valid.
Marcus Borg is someone who seems to have an open mind. Without it, we fall into the very trap of judgment that Jesus warned us about. Isn't it interesting how many "Christians" have remained caught in that trap? If you want to open your mind and embrace a new relationship with Jesus, I would highly recommend this book.
