Description: Very Good. 5 1/2" x 8" April 1997 Edition. Some cover edge wear and cover corners slightly turned up. One inked line of the title Art & Fear on the first title page. No other marks or stamps on this straight, square book. What is your art really about? Where is it going? What stands in the way of getting it there? These Are Questions That Matter. "This was such an enjoyable book to read. I would just call it "Observations on the Perils and Rewards of Artmaking". I highly recommend this as a comfort and companion for the irrepressible artmakers.
In sort, the book says, and I agree, that the best place to learn about your art, the only real way to move your art forward is to make your art. Heehehee! I found it ironic to read a book telling me to make my art--because I should be making art instead of reading, no? :D"
An even-handed, well-informed, sophisticated book that does away with all the fatalistic (and absurd) assumptions about artmaking in any medium. This feels like the simple, "I totally knew that, why didn't I think of it" wisdom of an uncle who has long lived and made peace with an art form that the reader is undertaking.
Gets right to correcting the misconceptions of talent, pressure, style, voice, persistence/quitting, and many many other things. A lot on the psychology of art and its process and how recent generations in a modern world have shaken up that process into something it is not.
This book makes me feel so understood. Highly recommended."
"The book made some very interesting points and did make me feel a bit better about myself and my art, but most of the time it just made me dislike myself and my art even more. I also felt as though the book contradicted itself many times over its course, and was very repetitive. Additionally, the book dragged on-- I felt as though the same message could have been gotten across in 30 pages or less."
"Like a conversation with your artist friends, Bayles and Orland lay it all out and tell the truth about creating art. My copy is highlighted and underlined to remind me of the real issues..not "artsy fartsy" babble but the gritty reality of trying to make art."
