"Fascinating book. Wright definitely comes off as the more intelligent of the two, but Borg makes some pretty valid criticisms. Neither quite stay within scholarship as much as I'd like, but it's interesting to see their perspectives."
"Wright represents a conservative scholarly response to the likes of Borg & other members of the Jesus Seminar. Here they go back & forth on various issues: Jesus' mission, death, Resurrection, divinity, birth, & Second Coming. Basically, Borg argues repeatedly for a distinction between the "pre-Easter" historical Jesus & the "post-Easter" Jesus of Christian experience & tradition, a distinction Wright rejects, insisting that Jesus saw himself as the Messiah. Generally I find Borg more compatible, though not always more convincing. Overall, I appreciated the civil but committed nature of the exchange"
"Possibly the most liberal and conservative Protestant theologians (who, incidentally, are best of friends)square off, each defending his stance on various aspects of Jesus, His life, mission, and death. I come to this area of intellectual and spiritual endeavor an absolute tyro, so every page WOWs me. After reading a chapter by Borg I find myself saying, "He makes a lot of sense," and when I finish a chapter by Wright on the same chapter, I find myself saying, "He makes a lot of sense." Rather than finding this frustrating, I am finding it both fun and stimulating.
********************************************************************** Now that I have finished the book, I wish I could grant it six stars.
Not only does each writer make his point, one's disagreement with other is always civil, even loving.
I came away clearly seeing how each was correct, yet neither wrong. It is rare to find such intellectual and spiritual exchanges so balanced and well articulated."
