"I have wanted to read Maus I by Art Spiegelman since my freshman year of college when I had to read Maus II, which I greatly enjoyed, for a class. In Maus, Art Spiegelman relates the story of his father's experiences during the Holocaust. Through a series of interviews with his father, Vladek, Art Spiegelman writes and illustrates Vladek's time in pre-war Poland, his marriage to Spiegelman's mother, Anja, his time in the Polish army, and his life in the ghetto before arriving at Auschwitz. The story Spiegelman presents is a sad and painful one, but it is worth reading and paying attention to because it examines the Holocaust and WWII in a unique and poignant manner. Personally, I love that this story is told as a graphic novel and I think Spiegelman's use of animals as human representations is pure genius.
Maus is extremely teachable and would be a great text to use in a high school classroom either as an introduction to graphic novels or as part of Holocaust unit. Students could benefit from studying the characters and themes in the novel as well as from studying Spiegelman's style. I also think that students would really enjoying reading this graphic novel and exploring the horrors of the Holocaust through a medium that they might not have as much experience with."

Spiegelman recounts all this without becoming judgmental. The characters have their flaws; in fact you soon forget that they are depicted as animals. Their relationships are intricate - Vladek understands why his Polish protectors sometimes demanded payment and why older people were sometimes given up to the Nazis. Spiegelman relates the effects of those events on the survivors' later years and upon the lives of the following generation. This book is not only a recounting of a wretched time in history, it is a character study of how people survive personal hardships."
"Maus was my first graphic novel. I think the story is important and needs to be told and retold so that no one forgets the magnitude of the tragedy. I like that the story has been handed down through family generations, father to son. It gives the book a unique flavor, especially the unusual humor of Vladek the protagonist. A powerful section in the book occurs when Vladek's wife, Anja, takes her life and their son (and author of the book) draws pictures about his feelings. Overall, I like the story but am not crazy about the genre of graphic novels. However, I know some students absolutely love them and I am sure I will use them in a unit plan some time. I think this book would work well with other novels about surviving trauma like Speak. Even Things Change shows the heroine overcoming her abusive boyfriend. It might make a good comparison using a theme of struggles showing how even though we might seem in control of situations, sometimes we need help to get out of them."
