About this title: More than four hundred years after her death, Mary Queen of Scots remains one of the most romantic and controversial figures in British history. Antonia Fraser's classic biography of her won the James Tait Prize when it was first published in 1969, became an international bestseller and was translated into nine languages. Mary passed her childhood in France and married the Dauphin to become Queen of France at the age of sixteen. Widowed less than two years later, she returned to Scotland as Queen after an absence of thirteen years. Her life then entered its best known phas: the early ...

"A review of the life of Mary from a decidedly pro-Mary angle it was nonetheless an interesting look at an historical figure about whom I knew little."
"This is a nearly 700 page biography, and incredibly detailed, The Scottish does not make move without Fraser commenting on it. I do feel like I have run a marathon, well not really I am too lazy for that, but the book equivalent at least, it was a lot of information to take in. Go on ask me anything?
I did enjoy it a lot, I gave it four stars because it is more a 3.8 didn't quiet get there but very close. I came to like Mary a lot, even if she is rash, stubborn and at times a little naive. Going to England to escape Scotland, bad idea, even from a 16th century point of view. Queen Elizabeth not the catholic friendly royal in Europe.
Fraser has great affection for the people she writes for, and Mary is often coated in praise. Though I am not sure I am completely completely convinced Mary had no idea on the fate of Darnely or the character of Bothwell. But you never know.
But if you like your biography's detailed and want to know more about this Queen that lived the life of a Shakespeare tragedy (in fact my have inspired the bard himself) this is the bio for you."
"Antonia Fraser is one of my favorite authors. This book about the fabled Mary Queen of Scots is a real heartbreaker--like that poor Other Boleyn Girl a generation earlier, Mary Queen of Scots was used and then abused by the people who were supposed to support and protect her.
Unlike Mary Boleyn, she did not have the smarts to survive the intrigues of nobility. Time after time, she chose the wrong man to champion her, took the low road, and antagonized people who could have helped her.
After I read this, I read somewhere else that the children's fairy tales about locked-up princesses were inspired by Mary's Catholic supporters. It does make sense; she was Queen for a very short time and spent most of her life in lock-up courtesy Elizabeth I.
I can't help thinking that Shakespeare would have loved to have written about Mary. You think Julius Caesar and Hamlet are violent? A Shakespearean take on the Queen of Scots would have made these look tame. But Mary was the Catholic cousin and competitor to Elizabeth, Shakespeare's patron, so he could not dare undertake this one."
