"Maniac Magee is another book i read in elementary school. The whole story is based on a boy named Jeffrey Lionel "Maniac" Magee. At an early age, his parents die. Therefore he is required to live with his aunt and uncle. As the story progresses, he ends up running away from home. He tries to find a home in the town of Two Mills. The east end is filled with blacks and the west end is full of whites. Throughout the story Jeffrey goes home to home looking for the right place to live. During the story, he meets people such as Amanda Beale, Mars Bars Thompson, John McNab, and more. These people help and hurt him in many ways. Some will help him to find a home and others will lead him in the wrong direction. People change over the course of this story. This leads to certain changes in Jeffrey's life. The last few chapters and the ending are very touching scenes in the book. When I read this book, I really love this book. I felt I could relate to it. I feel that other kids at a younger and older can do the same. I learned from this book that life may take you on a crazy course of many difficult situations, but you must stay true to yourself. You can't lose your identity and yourself in the mist of these events."
"This book is about a boy named Jeffrey Magee who is orphaned at a young age. He is sent to live with his aunt and uncle. Jeffrey runs away and lives on his own, eating with people he meets, sleeping with animals in the zoo, and running all the time. He comes to the city of Two Mills and meets a black girl named Amanda. Jeffrey becomes practically part of Amanda's family. The problem is that in Two Mills, there is a certain street that black people stay on one side of, and white people stay on the other. Some people are upset that Jeffrey doesn't seem to notice this divide. He makes some friends, and also some .. well, not friends. Jeffrey goes around doing crazy things, like hitting homeruns off of a pitcher that strikes everyone out, and going up and knocking on the door of the scary house that everyone is afraid of. He becomes known as Maniac Magee. This story is all about the people Jeffrey meets and the changes that he brings into their lives, and what they bring to his life."
This book is called maniac magee. The book is about a young boy who lives in a segragated town called Two Mills. The town is divided into two sides, one sides is the east end and the other the west end. East end is the side where african americans live and west end is where white people live. The boys name is Jeffrey and gets the name maniac from all the crazy things he can do. One day he crosses into the east end and tries to bring the two sides together, and that sends his life on a crazy adventure.
I would give this book five stars. I liked this book because it catches my interest and is a good mix of real life problems and what it was like when towns were segragated. This book was also very interesting because it showed many events and conflicts that could have happened. I believe Spinelli showed very well how segragated times could have been.
I recommened this book to any one who likes to learn about segragation and how life was back then."
"A really neat book. Excellent! Definitely deserving of its Newbery Award. I'd give it 4.5 stars. I find myself asking, "Why didn't I ever read this before?" I've certainly heard of it for years. My fourth grade daughter just read it at school and loved it. I really enjoyed the narrative voice and style. It starts out almost like a tall tale, but what Maniac really accomplished is better than a legend. So it's a meaningful story that teaches an important lesson without being preachy. The quick pace of the story matches the speedy main character. He is very appealing. I liked his courage, kindness, humility, joy in life and desire to help others. I was impressed that he was the way he was despite his history. It was amazing how he turned enemies to friends and brought out the best in people just by being himself, just by his example. Some of my favorite parts were when he befriended the old maintenance man at the zoo. I also appreciated the happy ending. I've heard other Spinelli books recommended, too--I'll have to read more."
