"Fairly 'blah' Bond book. After being brainwashed and attempting to shot M, Bond and the secret Service feel he needs a job that will allow him to redeem himself, so they send him to bump off an infamous killer for hire.
The lead in about Bond having a mission go wrong and needing to get back on track was interesting, but the actual mission ( aside from a cool setting), just doesn't click. Feels very flat and predictable and the bad guy isn't that cool or evil."
"The last Bond novel by Fleming, written when he had had one heart attack and would soon die of a second. Some say it was finished by another writer, but this is disputed. Fleming himself is purported to have said, "This is, alas, the last Bond and, again alas, I mean it, for I really have run out of both puff and zest." (quoted in Wikipedia article on the novel.)
Sadly, it shows. Highly implausible plot, rehashing much of the material from earlier books, without the puff and zest.
Still, worth a read if you enjoy pulp adventure writing or want to experience the entire Bond history."
"Over the summer I re-read all of the Ian Fleming James Bond books in order of their publication date(don't read any of the junk by others who followed Fleming after he died). Mostly I re-read the books because the re-issue paper-backs had such cool covers. The books are a one day read and absolutely a hoot."
