"I'm glad I got to read this first Richard Jury mystery cause it filled in the gaps as to how he met all the inhabitants of Long Piddleton. It's another comfortable mystery series like Tony Hillerman or on a smaller scale of characters, Sue Grafton. (has she finished up the alphabet yet? Our library has her up to G.) Anyway T.M.W.A.L.O.M. was comfortable reading so I finished it in a day. I'm still wondering whatever happened to Martha Grimes while she was writing The Blue Last? It was so spacey and didn't have an ending."
"I read a Martha Grimes mystery years ago and loved it. My father-in-law gave me another recently, and I loved it, which resparked my interest in her books. She's an American, but Grimes writes an excellent classic British mystery.
This is the first in the series of Richard Jury mysteries. We are introduced to all the main characters that will reappear in the further books - Melrose Plant, his aristocratic sidekick; Wiggins, his hypochondriacal sergeant; Marshall Trueblood, the gay antiques dealer; Vivian Rivington, the woman both Jury and Plant are interested in; Chief Racer, Jury's horrible boss; Mrs. Wasserman, his paranoid downstairs neighbor; Fiona Clingmore, Racer's beautiful but aging secretary; Cyril, the obtuse cat; and Melrose's obnoxious Aunt Agatha.
Two bizarre and public murders calls Richard Jury of Scotland Yard to Northhamptonshire (Northants), where he meets Melrose and Marshall. Long Piddleton, the town in question, will continue to be a player in all future books.
I won't get into details of plot; suffice to say that the Jury mysteries rank right up there with P.D. James and Agatha Christie. Why are all these fabulous mystery writers women???"
"Most of the time I have to read 3 books at a time. There's usually a non-fiction book for days when I can handle it, a novel and some short stories. I used to read Stephen King before bed, but every few pages I would get scared and wake up again. More and more there's one of these british mysteries for putting me to sleep. I have read most of Martha Grimes' Richard Jury books and "the details are divine", Grimes' "wit sparkes, her plots intrigue, and her characters are absolutely unforgettable"."
"I liked this book. I found it interesting and fun. There were a lot of characters to get mixed up but in the end I didn't mind. I enjoyed the delightful ineptness of Lady Andry and the clever ex-Lord Plant. I loved the charactization of Inspector Jury. All in all I thought it was a great, quick, cozy read."
