An important book in the history of space travel; Science writer Andrew Chaikin's detailed account of the history making voyages of the Apollo astronauts, from the program's inception in 1961 to the first steps on the moon on July 20, 1969 and the final mission in December 1972. read more
"I watched the HBO miniseries before reading this book. I should have done the opposite. The miniseries pretty faithfully follows the book, but of course, the book has more detail and I would have enjoyed the miniseries more had I read the book first. I got a much better sense of the challenges overcome and the sacrifices made to get to the moon from the book and learned a lot more about the space program and the physics involved in space travel. I really enjoyed the book as it was well written, edited and told an interesting story."
"Suberb story telling. Gave depth and dimension to the astronauts as human beings without losing sight of the awesome technological challenge inherent to Apollo."
"I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you have any interest in the space program at all, you should read this book. The book takes you on a journey through the history of the Apollo program. Chaikin explains things in a manner that is both clear and entertaining. His descriptions of the more technical aspects of the space program are quite simple to understand for someone who, like me, is not well-versed in that area. He also adds a great deal of humanity to the venture. I highly recommend this book."
