"I bought this book when I was about 11 years old and never read it. Now I know why. The beginning, actually a good half if not two-thirds of the book is incredibly slow moving. What should have taken one or two chapters takes half the book to discover. But the ending was fairly entertaining and the premise of the whole story is cute. But this is YA that is meant for its age group. The "mystery" is predictable to the point of tedium. And don't be fooled by the title. This is not your Hogwarts-kind of "magic"."
"Another favorite from childhood, and another inspiration for my favorite hobby of putting together the pieces of true stories from the past through research. I always wanted a house like Aunt Sarah had in the story. My grandfather's house came close, including an old attic with generations of heirlooms. Reading childhood books like this one for the first time when you are older might be fun, but I believe something will be missing if you can't look at the story through the eyes of a child."
