About this title: "A Maggot" is not a historical novel in the normal sense. It began as a quirk or obsession (a 'maggot' in the archaic sense of the word) which found its setting in the second wave of Protestant Dissent in England. It took shape as a mystery - a compelling investigation of unaccountable motives and deeds - which led through beguiling paths to a starling vision at its centre.

"John Fowles' last novel, and certainly his toughest. This is a sort of hybrid Canterbury Tales / Close Encounters. I don't pretend to understand what Fowles attempted here -- all I could decipher was a group of trekking pilgrims in 17th (?) century (it actually felt like an earlier time than that -- almost medieval) England who witness an extra-terrestrial visitation/abduction and have not the language, nor experience to comprehend it. Fowles, interestingly, creates a narrator investigator who tries to piece the entire story together, but the narrator himself comes from a milieu that lacks the vocabulary, context, and understanding to explain such a visit. Even though it's a difficult read, it's not boring. If you're looking for a novel, however, that answers all the questions that its plot raises...this is NOT that novel."
"Interesting thing. No clear cut final answer about what really happened; many pages of testimony, all disagreeing; seems to imply that the girl saw extraterrrestrials in the middle ages, but not confirming it. Seems the main idea is to illustrate, by showing us what the different styles of characters say and do, what different classes of people were like and what their perceptions were like, and WOULD be like in the face of extraordinary events--like Coleridge's project in Lyrical Ballads, 1799. Class, sex, education all shown to be related to one's perceptions. Well done and the style is persuasively "real" and true to the period, compared with genuine old writings. Nice work, but not really satisfying."
