"As a girl with the middle name of Madaline (yes it's spelled differently) I loved these books and felt like there was a connection between myself and this spunky little girl. I like the message of non-conformity it sends to children, which in small doses is a great thing."
"9.) Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans Bemelmans, L. (1939) Madeline. New York, NY: Penguin Putnam Books. Illustrated by N/A Summary: This story is about a little girl who gets sick and has to go to the hospital she wakes up with a scar. The children get to follow Madeline throughout her adventures. I would use this story to teach about community helpers and the hospital."
"Bemelmans' use of rhyming verse is effective at creating a sing-song quality for this long-loved classic. However, the division of the lines is sometimes awkwardly placed in order to allow for the various pictures used to supplement the story. Many of the concepts displayed in the pictures are outdated and/or foreign for young readers today and would require explanation. The book works well as a way of easing childhood fears about an operation or other illness that requires a hospital visit. The main character Madeline endears herself to readers by wiggling her way into their hearts with her daring personality and unabashed individualism."
"One word review for this book: BOOOORRRINNNNGG. I hated Madeline as a kid. It was a problem, too, because adults who have no idea what a kid likes would always buy these and put them in kindergarden classes and day cares, so I couldn't get away from the stupid thing. There was only one book to read, and it was this one: watch a stupid little girl wander around consistently disobeying her caretaker like a naughty brat... and she doesn't even do anything fun when she gets in trouble! Yawn."
