About this title: Just before the turn of the century, a renegade Russian aristocrat named Madame Blavatsky came to America claiming that man was descended not from the ape but from spiritual beings. Thus began Theosophy, the very first "new age" religion. This thought-provoking and often hilarious study delineates the course of Theosophy and other sects which have come down through the years. "This is a good general introduction into the Spiritualist movements of the latter part of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. These started out as fads and cons that the decline of organized religion in the West left people susceptible to, but developed over time into trends of thought that exercised considerable appeal to and influence over a surprising number of serious writers, artists, and even scholars of a sort--Aldous Huxley and Cristopher Isherwood, for example. The book traces the competitions and arguments that continually fed the process of fragmentation that the movement was subject to: with so little in the way of acknowledged evidence or authority to rest on, and with the appearance of many charismatic individuals claiming spiritual insight and the right to leadership, this fragmentation seems to have been inevitable.
It is a fascinating story, told with a sane skepticism. The book, however, keeps such an ironic distance to the material that one comes away with little real sense of how it could have developed any intellectual appeal at all, and it doesn't attempt anything more than the scantiest of sketches of the actual systems of belief themselves. It focuses rather on personalities.
The book was also rather carelessly written--on the few topics on which I knew something I noticed several lapses: names, dates and such, that could easily have been checked had Washington had a mind to."
