About this title: This acclaimed history of New York concentrates on the city's dark underside, particularly in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A gifted writer with a lucid yet lyrical style, Sante brings an incredible secret history to life. He writes of saloons frequented only by street urchins under the age of twelve, of waterfront hotels with trapdoors in the floor for the easy disposal of bodies, and of a host of other factoids that he unearthed during years of research in dusty municipal archives.

"An exhaustively researched portrait of the New York of the nineteenth and early twentieth century which ignores the rise of the boosters and big business and concentrates on the city's vast underbelly. The "anything goes" atmosphere of the period is striking as the young nation began to find its feet, although New York was, as now, more of an international city state than an intrinsically American city.
This is the period depicted in the Scorsese film "Gangs of New York" and just as that film is hard to like beside more comprehensible portraits of more modern times ("The Godfather Part II", "Goodfellas"), it's often easy to see the events described in "Low Life" as remote and too far in the past. That Sante helps bring the Victotian age city to life is a huge credit and leaves us urging him to bring his attention to subsequent time frames. This edition includes an excellent afterword from 2003 which shows just how far New York has changed."
"A fabulous history of the Lower East Side of Manhattan's gritty past. Hard to juxtapose it against the Renaissance that has turned the neighborhood into one of NYC's most hippest and desirable."
"I loved this book and this reminds me I should reread it. Sante brings alive the New York of my immigrant grandparents. He reminds us how relatively young the city is and how recent its enormous strides into commerce, culture and refinement. Anyone who loves NY like I do or who has family history there should read this fascinating, well written, carefully researched work. It's a real page turner too!"
