"Love That Dog, by Sharon Creech, is a story about a boy named Jack who does not think that boys should write poetry. He has an understanding and sensitive teacher who does not push him, but instead helps him see the power and beauty of poetry. The book is written from Jack's point of view in journal form. He reflects on the poems that his teacher shares with the class, and writes his own poetry. Throughout the story Jack writes about his dog, and it is not until the end of the story that the reader finds out why Jack is tormented about this subject. Jack is also inspired by the author Walter Dean Myers who wrote a poem called "Love that Boy." He writes a poem that he calls "Love that Dog," which is inspired by Walter Dean Myers, and with his teachers encouragement he invites Mr. Myers to come to their school. When the students find out that the beloved author has accepted their invitation they make many plans for the big day. This is one of my favorite books of all time. The way Jack writes in such a real voice made me truly feel his emotions. You can tell right from the first few lines that he is sad about something. His character is so well developed that I felt like I was learning about poetry as I read. He expresses his feelings toward each poem in a straight forward and humble way which helped the story sound natural, and flow. I think this would work as a read aloud or a novel study for kids in third grade through fifth grade. It would be an excellent springboard for a poetry unit especially since Sharon Creech put the poems that she refers to in the story in the back of the book. The class could analyze how Jack expressed his emotions through his poetry, and how his teacher, Miss Stretchberry, allowed him to do this in a safe environment."
Love That Dog is a book that would be appropriate for upper elementary or middle school students. Even high school students could appreciate the story and format of this book. Love That Dog is a novel told in free verse and is about a young boy named Jack's struggle with poetry. Although he likes some of the poems that his teacher reads to the class, he struggles with writing poetry. Even though his teacher compliments him on some of his work, Jack requests that his name not be put on the poetry that is displayed on the classroom wall.
Eventually, Jack's confidence grows - especially when he is introduced to Walter Dean Myer's poetry. Jack even writes a poem "inspired by Mr. Myers" and writes a letter to Walter Dean Myers, inviting him to his school. Due to a lucky coincidence, Walker Dean Myers does come and reads some of his poems to the students. Jack makes sure that his teacher hides his poem that was inspired by Walter Dean Myers so the poet doesn't get mad that Jack "copied" him.
Throughout the book, information about Jack's yellow dog is revealed through his poetry. However, it is not until Jack's final poem, Love That Dog (inspired by Walter Dean Myers' Love That Boy) is revealed that the reader knows the tragedy that befell Jack's beloved yellow dog. To thank Walter Dean Myers for coming to his school, Jack mails him a copy of the poem, Love That Dog.
I listened to this book on Playaway format. This was something that was completely new to me and I must say that I enjoyed it. As always, I have some critiques for the voice actor on this particular recording. The book was clearly read by a man - not someone who at least sounded like an elementary school boy. Also, the narration was a little creepy and robotic at times, as the voice actor strived to make his diction show the format of the free verse. Although I loved the little audio player and would recommend the format - I would recommend actually reading Love That Dog and not listening to it.
This book also has a sequel, Hate That Cat. I am currently reading it now but I cannot tell if I like it as much as Love That Dog."
"I am so happy Dr. Junko Yokota suggested this novel to read because it is one of her favorites. I feel Sharon Creech , winner of the Newbery Medal for Walk Two Moons, took me to a place that was full of sounds, images, and forms. This short novel is a weekly journal entry from the point of view of Jack, a young student, initially appalled at the suggestions to read, let alone, write a poem. Each week a poem was recited to the class and his journaling about the assignment showed a progression of his emotional struggles and successes of putting "himself" out there with poetry. Jack found his favorite poet and grows into his "own" to help others write their own poetry. The rhythm steadily gains speed and you will not want to put the book down until the very end. I read it aloud and had to stop using my voice while my eyes kept up with the pace. I found my throat swelled and even a tear touched my cheek and then off to another celebration of experiences that I was connecting to. A pause I was a bit embarrassed to explain to the hubby about. I feel Sharon Creech demonstrates how Jack evolved by having access to wonderfully diverse and rich poetry and embodied this lesson in a cute verse with more space between the lines like how Jack wrote it the first time. This is a great read for fourth through sixth grades and feel everyone can be drawn in by Jack's poetic process."
"I had seen this on shelves in bookstores for ages. I finally got it from the library and read it in about 25 minutes. It's written from the point of view a child, a diary written in poetic form. The boy reacts to famous poems like The Red Wheelbarrow by William Carlos Williams and Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Morning by Robert Frost. At first he timidly experiments with his own replications of famous poems, with his Blue Car standing in the place of the red wheelbarrow. There is also a simple, touching plot that arches gracefully over the course of his poetic diary. I will be sure to use this the next time I do a poetry unit. It covers many great poem kids learn in school and demonstrates several poetic devices in a natural way. A smart book that will leave many teachers thinking, "Why didn't I think of writing this years ago?" I would use this with 2nd to 8th graders (what a range!)."
