About this title: One of a series of titles first published by Faber between 1930 and 1990, and in a style and format planned with a view to the appearance of the volumes on the bookshelf. "This is the first of the plays that we are doing for English Lit A2.
I can't say that I enjoyed this play that much. I found, in particular the first half, very dry and boring and I couldn't understand where it was going or even what the point of it was.
I'll admit though that it did get much more interesting towards the end and it was very hard to put down at points because the plot suddenly changed so dramatically and I really wanted to know what was going to happen.
I did also like the circularity of it and that in keeping with other Modernistic books it didn't have a happy ending.
The characterisation was strong but because I disliked Jimmy so much it was hard to get into though I did feel for Alison and the writing at the end as she spoke about her ordeal was very very good.
Realistic and gritty? Yes An enjoyable read? Well as I said it got better.
"i think that what i liked most of all about this play is that it is strictly about people, not about historical events, not about specific places or idioms, but about people, together with the web of thoughts, reasonings and feeling that these ones possess. It'a a play with cojones, red blooded enthusiasm and lots of anger. A true masterpiece of the genre."
