"The Longest Day is a splendid work. I've recently read several books on World War II, and they tend to talk about armies, navies, and planes and their movements: all very interesting, but tedious at times.
Mr. Ryan talks about a single day in this war, and from the aspect of the soldiers that fought it, and the local residents who were mixed up in it. There are truly some amazing stories told, mostly serious, heroic, and terrifying. But there is a lot of humor mixed in, and one really gets the feel of what the soldiers on both sides were facing.
My only complaint was that the story ended very abruptly but as promised, at midnight of June 6th, 1944. Several threads were left hanging as the bewitching hour came. I found that I wanted much more of the book.
It's an excellent read, even for those that are not particularly enamoured with history."
"I read this many years ago. I have a first edition copy my father purchased when it first came out. Its in my permanent library. You'll also like "A Bridge Too Far" and "The Last Battle" by Ryan"
"This book tells the story of DDay from the point of view of its participants, from ranking generals to lowly privates. This history is human and very real, and will convert the least interested to the immediacy of the past."
"The author weaves personal stories of D-Day participants (American, British, German, and French; civilians and military) into a well-researched account of how the military leaders on both sides handled the attack."
