About this title: Two former Texas Rangers, Woodrow Call and Augustus McCrae, drive cattle from Texas to Montana with a crew of oddballs, misfits, and true heroes. With its roots firmly sunk in classic trail-drive lore, this novel nevertheless transcends the Western genre. Commenting on the book's phenomenal success, McMurtry said, "LONESOME DOVE was a critical ...

"i was skeptical at first, having never read a western before, but the writing is wonderful and the story makes it hard to put down. paints an amazing picture of the american west."
"Larry McMurty is an extremely talented and versatile author. This book is well written and one of the "can't put it down" type that keeps you engrossed to the end.
Lonesome Dove is my favorite of all the novels written by McMurty."
"One of the finest westerns I've ever read. The way the charactors were fleshed out, the story locations, guarentee that it will be read and enjoyed over and over again."
"Gage Glisson Mrs. Baltz Pre-AP English 10 12 December 2008 Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry The book Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry takes place in a time frame in which I have never and will never be able to physically experience. The book is first set in Lonesome Dove, Texas, and later in various states they pass through on the cattle drive, including Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska, as well as Arkansas when July Johnson first appears in the story. The final setting is Montana. This is all during a time in the West in which cattle ranchers were able to free graze. Captain Call is part owner of the "Hat Creek Cattle Company" along with Augustus McCrae and is the hardest worker of the two. He is a former Texas Ranger and because of his leadership role in the outfit, he is often called the Captain. He is a taciturn man who believes in completing his duties above all else, living an ethical life, and responsibly looking after those who work for him. However, he lives in denial about what's really important and often hurts those for whom he cares the most. Augustus McCrae or also known as "Gus" is also a former Texas Ranger. He is the more sensitive and understanding of the two partners, although as the captain says, he's also the laziest. He has a deep understanding of what makes life work, and yet he, too, often makes mistakes that directly impact on people he least wants to hurt. Newt Dobbs is a seventeen year old boy who has lived for ten years with Captain Call and Gus. He wants to know who his father is and to be taken seriously as a cowboy. He goes on the cattle drive with the two men and Gus finally tells him that the Captain is his father, but Newt never hears the Captain publicly admit he's his son. This book has more than one theme. One extremely important theme that is eminently prevalent is that of regret. The main characters have many instances where they come to regret decisions they made. For example, Clara Allen has extreme regret that she was unable to separate Gus from Call, whose decisions keep Gus from her all those years. She also regrets that she never accepted his marriage proposal, even though in her heart, she knew that they were too much alike to have ever been happy in a marriage. The feeling of regret is obviously very human, but in this novel it often sets the mood. Another important theme is the stereotypical good vs evil. However, in spite of being very generic, this theme is a very important one in Lonesome Dove. The cowboys are the good guys, who seek justice when necessary and become judge and jury in many instances. They also try to bring peace to the settlers and track the bad guys like Blue Duck. Blue Duck is an Indian, but he is not an Indian who seeks revenge for the loss of their culture and their land; he is a killing machine who must be stopped. There are other instances as well where good triumphs over evil, but since life is not always that simple, good and evil often merge during the course of the story and the outcome is not always so straightforward. Although this book is set in the distant past, it still has many valuable lessons that can be learned and used during everyday life. To further your understanding of how Lonesome Dove comes to an end, this book is available in the library here at school and the county library. This book is a great one and I would recommend it to all kinds of book lovers because of the audacity of the characters and the prevalent themes in the book.
