"I only read the 24th chapter of this book, Surcharged Emotionalism PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY (pg. 366-377), for history. Be that as it may, I will try to give a review based on what I read. I felt that this book is very special and unique in it's layout. Schonberg gives detailed information, but not so detailed that it feels as though you are reading a 300 paged biography. He tells of the personal life on the composer, but unlike most books which will perhaps list when the composer wrote a certain piece and leave it at that, Schonberg goes into the composer's thoughts on the piece and it's musical form as well as the critics' and public response. Overall a very nice mixture of the composer's privet, personal life and his musical education, compositions, and musical obligations. I felt that the author often times gave two sides or views to a score or situation. This gives the reader much more information than just "This was his greatest piece and this was his worst" or "This is the reason he did this and he died from this", etc. The right amount of general and inside information. Not too long, but not one of those books that when you finish the chapter on the composer you go, "Um...I already knew all that." I learned a lot about Tchaikovsky. His life, his personality, his opinions, and his composition style. There's pictures too! The book is written in time line order, and Schonberg shows how the lives of the composers overlapped and what they thought of each other. I only have one complaint about this book and that is that it did not have a chapter on Antonio Vivaldi, one of my favorite (if not my top favorite) composers. Otherwise it has a good verity of popular and not so popular composers. Not suggested for real young readers as many of the composer's (or at least Tchaikovsky's) lives are not very moral. I would very much like to get this book again and read more of it - love to read it cover to cover. A entertaining, informative collection of the great music creators!"
"This is the most fascinating book on music history that I've ever read. It is written completely with biographies on each major composer from the middle ages to the mid 1900s. Several of these chapters I've read and reread numerous times."
