About this title: Giorgio Vasari's "The Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors and Architects" was first published in Florence in 1550. Vasari, a painter and architect, had traveled throughout Italy sketching the buildings and art works he encountered when he contemplated compiling a record of great Italian artists and their work. The "Lives" was revised and expanded in 1568, and remains perhaps the most reliable and complete source of biographical information on the Italian artists of the late 13th century to the Renaissance.

These biographies of the great quattrocento artists have long been considered among the most important of contemporary sources on Italian Renaissance art. Vasari, who invented the term "Renaissance, " was the first to outline the influential theory of Renaissance art that traces a progression through Giotto, Brunelleschi, and finally the titanic figures of Michaelangelo, Da Vinci, and ... read more
"It's a tough read - but what book from the Renaissance isn't? There's some interesting stuff here... however, Vasari isn't the most reliable source so it's sort of like reading gossip. ;0)"
"This is a book for those interested in the artists of the Italian Renaissance. I have only read about one of the artists--Perugino--whose later paintings are more to my liking for this period of mostly religious work. Vasari's Lives provides a lot of interesting details of the paintings and the artist. My recommendation is to read only one chapter of an artist a month. You will need to refer to the Web sites for pictures of the paintings."
