"In the "Little House the Prairie" Series, Laura Ingalls Wilder shares the story of her life, beginning in her early childhood and continuing through the early years of her married life. In "Little Town on the Prairie (No. 7), Mary has lost her sight and Laura begins work as a seamstress to earn money for Mary's education at a college for the blind. Laura meets Almanzo Wilder, and tells stories about the beginning of their relationship. Laura is now a young lady!"
"Olivia: What I find sad because of the animals that Laura and Pa ated. Because the family they ated animals, that was pretty sad for the animals.
Chloe: I liked the book because they got a little blue and white kitty. What else I liked about the book is that they weren't hungry like the Long Winter. She met Mr. Wilder. I liked it because Mary goes to college.
Olivia: But I didn't like because the teacher got mad, because she was only listening to Nellie Oelson.
Chloe: The woman who wasn't being nice to Laura was called Miss Wilder and her real name was Eliza Jane.
Michelle: I liked that Almonzo walked Laura home from church. I'm sad that Laura is going to leave her family to teach school 12 miles away."
"The winding down into domestic/city living is certainly the logical conclusion to the series, but it makes for less interesting reading than the other, more adventure/peril-driven pieces. Here, the long winter is overtaken by a surprisingly mellow winter, and tales of hardship are hung up for tales of personalized name-cards and the latest fashions. The 'Literaries' had me chuckling...I was expecting some sort of book club, or at least discussion of literature, but they started out with a spelling bee, moved on to charades, a music program, and...uh.......a minstrel show. Yeah, that. I know it was 'of the time' and all, but I'd like to hold off on reading any more books using the line 'Pa was the Darky who was in back, rattling the bones' for a while unless they're by Amiri Baraka.
Like all of the books in the series so far, there are plenty of good moments enough to recommend it. 'sides, if you're already six books into the series, you gotta keep going, right? I once read all ten volumes of L. Ron Hubbard's 'Mission Earth' series over a summer, not because they were particularly good, but because I didn't realize how bad they were until book four, and I have problems with calculating risk vs. reward. No worries here, though...this is a good'un."
"As the title suggests, this book, more so than any other, depicts town life in DeSmet South Dakota. After surviving the LONG winter (which was actually two winters), the Ingalls decide to move into town for the winters (wise of them) although they do still spend the summers on their claim outside of town. Because the focus of this book is town life, there is a lot more in here about Laura's friends, school life, church activities and socializing and less about planting, churning butter, and freezing to death. Laura's grown up enough now to wear her hair up (she's likely 15 or 16) and go to chaperoned parties. Mary's off to the college for the blind in Iowa and makes occasional appearances. The evil Nellie Olson has returned to torture Laura (although, in reality, Laura combined two rotten girls from her past into the one character of Nellie Olson). Finally, Laura realizes that she will be the one that has to become a teacher (this had originally been the plan for Mary) and help provide support to her family."
