"Love ths set. My mom bought it for me when I was a child, and now we are reading them to my 4 year old daughter who also loves them. I will say that the subsequent books in the series are not as engaging as the first novel, "Little House in the Big Woods" but they are still a great introduction to the time period. Also, you may have to explain a little about Native Americans, some of the books portray Native Americans in a poor light that does not explain what really happened. We've used this as a great opportunity to open our daughter's mind to understand prejudice and how what we read is often one person's perception, but not necessarily reality. I was really surprised to see that my 4 year old understood when we explained it to her and was even able to ask relevant questions about it."
"I was in love with The Little House Collection when I was in grade school. My mom would always tell me to keep reading them because I needed to see how others lived many years ago. I found them so entertaining, especially small things such as making maple syrup candy. I also think that it's important to learn about the lifestyle of families living in America a while back. It shows how much our society has progressed and how technology can really influence our daily procedures. Overall, this collection of novels teaches us about how people used to make a living in a new, interesting way."
"I read this story to my girls as they fell asleep at night. One of them got into it so I bought them the entire series. We still have them. Eventually I read through every one.
I liked this story. It is a genuine tale; no fancy, wordy language, no quest for propaganda reads, no play for metaphored descriptions, foreshadowing, etc. It is just pure and real, as if Laura Ingalls Wilder is right in front of you at the bus stop. That is its strength, not to mention bringing us there, to a place we all wish to be; with empty space and a life where we are truly free."
"I ordered this boxed set of the Little House books to read aloud with my 10 year old granddaughter. I remember reading the books when I was in elementary school in the late 1960's and loved them. My granddaughter just started watching re-runs this summer on tv of the Little House tv show with Michael Landon, so she was familiar with the characters. She and I took turns reading chapters outloud this past weekend of the Little House in the Big Woods, the first book in the series. We just loved it! I would highly recommend this wonderful boxed set series!"
