About this title: A history of the author Laura Ingalls Wilder's own family, as well as a very thorough overview of pioneer life in America, LITTLE HOUSE IN THE BIG WOODS is the first book in the beloved nine-book Little House series. Set in the woods of Wisconsin during the 1870s, this book follows one year in the life of the Ingalls family--Pa, Ma, Mary, Laura, and baby Carrie. Although LITTLE HOUSE IN THE BIG WOODS is primarily a testament to the author's family, the book also provides detailed information about the struggles and constant hard work of pioneer life. For example, readers will learn how Ma, ...

"The whole series is great reading aloud to one's kids. My husband and i both took turns reading every other night and sometimes we caught each other reading ahead all alone. Our two boys loved these books so much we read them aloud three times in two years around the time they were 7 and nine. (They are two years apart.) There is also a series her daughter or granddaughter wrote to continue which are almost as good and helped us keep the whole story alive for a bit longer as we didn't want them to end.
Kids and adults learn so much through these books. the hardest part though was their fear of the native americans but it's history and that's the way it was back then though there were times they had positive encounters. Mostly the series is so helpful to help all of us remember that it wasn't so long ago that people drew their own water, built their own houses and lived off the land.
Savor this series with your children. You won't regret it."
"Read my review of The Little House on the Prairie. It sums these wonderful books up for me!!!
Okay, now I'm getting into childhood loves.... I must have read ALL the Little House books 10 or so times each. I dreamed Alamanzo Wilder's life, I fantasized I was in Laura and Mary and Carrie and Grace's world.... I baked stuff in the kitchen with their homey life in mind. I made yarn harnesses and cardboard box wagons for my plastic horses and packed my LittleKiddles and Barbies in them and set out to...... the other side of the stone wall, across the field.... or whereever! Barbie going to the beach? Barbie being a fashion princess? Barbie outfits? Not in my world! In my world any resemblence to "Barbie & Ken and Skipper" was only in form, certainly not in action or lifestyle. No way. Adventure was the name of my game! No matter what, No matter where, No matter when! Plain and Simple, I was INFATUATED with these wonderful stories about Pioneer life in America.
I so adored these books.... I can't say enough about them... they were just wonderful for a lonely little girl like me.... they had a happy family where pa and ma loved each other, they had good values - which I recognized even as a child, they lived in little, intimate cabins which always seemed snug and cozy... they had a wholesome life.... so seemingly unlike my own.
Thank you Laura Ingalls Wilder for giving me the material to create my own incredibly wonderful and complex and thrilling adventure worlds."
"Nakyla so desperately wants to learn to read and has become obsessed with my set of "Little House on the Prairie" books. I don't know if it is the shape or color of the books or the box they are in, but she really wants to learn to read them.
So I started reading them to her. We are reading them in order. I read them once when I was younger, but it is nice to read them again. It is really interesting to see not only how different their day to day life was, but also how they felt about the behavior of children. There are a lot of phrases and things related to behavior and discipline that I don't believe in, but if you take it as part of the historical value of the book, it's not as much of a bother.
The best part about these books is the questions that Nakyla asks me about them. She is really interested in the things that happen and even days later still talks about it. It is so nice that we are sharing such a positive book that is branching from my childhood to hers."
"One night as I sat down to read My Little Pony Pop Stars to my daughter, I said to myself, "No more! No more Disney Princess, My Little Pony, Hello Kitty, or Strawberry Shortcake for bedtime stories!" I thought that surely there was something I could read to her that we could both enjoy. So I picked this book up at the library--a little unsure if reading a chapter each night would hold my daughter's attention--especially since I didn't really know anything about the characters or the story (I've never even watched one of the TV episodes). But from the first chapter, my daughter and I were hooked. She LOVED Laura and each day reminded me that we had another chapter to read. We also loved talking about "the olden days" and how Laura's life was different from her's in some ways, but similar in others. After reading about Laura's old corn cob doll, I said to my daughter, "Isn't it funny that Laura has a corn cob for a doll?" With the utmost serious face, she said to me, "Mom, that is not funny--that is sad." (This of course coming from a child who probably owns twenty dolls). So of course our favorite part was when Laura received a pretty rag doll for Christmas. She also has started to pretend that she is Laura and one day while she was downstairs with my husband, he yelled, "She's calling me Pa and wants to churn butter!"
We finished reading the book last night and I have to say that the last chapter was so sweet and beautiful that I can't wait to read the next one--and either can my daughter. This was such a fun book to read together."
