"This is by far one of the best books I've read in a VERY long time. It's an autobiography of a Caucasian boy who learns he is 1/4 African American when he is 10 years old. After his mother leaves and his father tumbles into alcoholism, he is raised by his "truly" family in the projects of Muncie, Indiana during the 1950's.
This book not only explored this boy's identity crisis and society's perceptions from both the black and white communities, it also challenges the reader to define "family" with total disregard to genetics.
This book was eye-opening, heart-wrenching, triumphant, and overall educational. I'm very glad I read this book. Every book club in America should be reading and discussing this book."
"This was an amazing book, about a man who thought he was white until he was 10 years old, and then discovered that he is part black - which means everything in Muncie, Indiana at the time of the Jim Crow laws. Engrossing and disturbing - and a fast read!"
