About this title: Pi, the precocious animal-loving son of an Indian zookeeper, loses his family in a shipwreck en route to North America--and is left alone in a lifeboat with a man-eating Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, with whom he manages (thanks to his zoo background) to strike up an ingenious truce. When they finally reach land and the tiger disappears, Pi finds that no one will believe his story--and so he creates an alternative tale, one that is false but sounds true. This whimsical fantasy was short-listed for Canada's Governor General's Literary Award and won the Booker Prize in 2002. Also a New ...

"This is the story of a 16 year old Indian boy's fight for survival after being the ship he was traveling on sinks leaving him alone in a life boat with a Royal Bengal tiger, a hyena, an orang-utan and a zebra with a broken leg.
I found it very enjoyable and chock full of philosophical thoughts and observations. It is extremely quotable and puts into words many things I have reflected on in the past:
"I'll be honest about it. It is not atheists who get stuck in my craw, but agnostics. Doubt is useful for a while. We must all pass through the garden of Gethsemane. If Christ played with doubt, so must we. If Christ spent an anguished night in prayer, if He burst out from the Cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" then surely we are also permitted doubt. But we must move on. To choose doubt as a philosophy of life is akin to choosing immobility as a means of transportation." - Life of Pi
While it is evident that many of these insights are far beyond what an average teenager would be enlightened on, this does not come off as strange or unrealistic in the novel seeing as he does have an immense amount of free time on his hands."
"To read the synopsis on the back cover of this book, you'd wonder what you were getting into: a 16 year old Indian boy adrift in a lifeboat on the Pacific ocean with a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan, and a 450 pound Bengal tiger.
The story is so well told, and you learn so much about animal behaviour, that you'd believe this unbelievable story actually took place. Until he lands on a strange island. That's when he lost me. But it was an entertaining story of man-against-nature, man-against-beast, man-against-man, and even man-against-himself.
I thought Pi's attempts at finding God by embracing three religions simultaneously was ludicrous, as they believe things completely opposite to one another. However, in spite of those two things, I would recommend this book. I can see why it won the awards it did."
"This book reads as if a fairy tale epic for adults. I could not get over the immense detail about zoology, religious practices and how this young boy who so loved God did what he could to survive a terrible situation.
There is no mystery in the story about whether he survives and that is not important. This story is plainly about the life in a story and how that life can be very real, even if it's a fantastical construction.
The best part of the book is a portion devoted to a carnivorous island that Pi and his tiger come to in their journey on the life boat. The island seems to be floating in the ocean as a large network of tree roots become feeding grounds for algae and a nation of meerkats.
It is at that point where you start wondering if the story is true or if it's a fantasy. The third section then completely twists everything around and you begin to understand what really happened on that boat in the middle of the sea."
"So imaginative, cover to cover. I felt it just kept getting better and better. Some authors will bring you to a peak just to let you down at the end...didn't happen with Martel's ingenious plot. Some happenings were so well detailed you could feel his feelings in yourself. Some events were even more grafic than you can imagine, but felt very real. Totally enjoyed this book. Looking for another just like it!"
