"“An Arabian Mosaic” is, as its subtitle says, a collection of short stories by Arab women writers. Each story is different but there is a connectedness as one would expect in an edited work. While the editor notes they deal with the cyclical nature of a woman’s life, I find a different theme underlying the stories. The stories exhibit a sense of being trapped in a life’s situation. We find women stuck in arranged marriages that turned sour. In other stories we find young girls discovering what they thought was fact was actually a sham. Yet I was fascinated by the stories, maybe because the perspectives are not dissimilar to those of women all over the world or maybe because the idea that Arab women are so cloistered is so prevalent in the west that it was surprising to see the insights of these women authors."
