About this title: Since its publication a decade ago, Let the Nations Be Glad! has provided thousands of seminary students, missionaries, and pastors with a sound theological foundation for missions. Piper now offers a revised and expanded edition of this theological and biblical defense of God's supremacy in all things. Drawing on texts from the Old and New Testaments, Piper demonstrates that worship is the ultimate goal of the church and that proper worship drives missionary outreach. "I recommend this book to anyone who plans on going to missions or supporting a missionary. Piper helps explain why missions exists and seeing the supremacy of God in every part of the mission. "Missions exists because worship doesn't. Worship is ultimate, not missions, because God is ultimate, not man...""
"Let the Nations be Glad! was a terrifically profitable read and a terrifically arduous read.
I think I will always have difficulties with Piper's writing style. I still cannot quite grasp what it is about his writing which makes it so laborious for me to read. Perhaps it is because he stuffs so much truth into so few pages or maybe it is because he makes numerous qualifications to make sure his readers do not misinterpret his meanings or maybe it is because he relies heavily on the Bible and therefore inserts verse after verse into his chapters to show that what he is saying lines up with Biblical truth. I don't know. There might be more reasons, I'm almost sure of it, but I'm still unsure of what it is exactly that makes his writing difficult for me to read.
It just might be that his zeal for God and for God's Word pushes him to jump from thought to thought without a clear and easily understandable structure. But I still don't know if the onus is on him or me.
Ah well.
Let the Nations be Glad! is a must read. Piper helps us see what our motivation(s) should be to preach the word to the nations or to all the peoples. He says that "missions exists because worship doesn't." He goes onto say that true worship begins with the affections, rooted in Truth, and manifested in outward living (created and sustained by the Holy Spirit). Worship happens, or should happen, every day of the week, always and forever. Unceasing. And this worship is directed in and to God in the image of Jesus Christ.
In essence, we who love God will love to share the old, old story so that all peoples on the earth may come to rejoice in the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. We share the good news because of our joy in Jesus Christ and for the joy of others, which is to see them find their joy in Christ as their supreme treasure and great love. He alone satisfies our longings, He is the bread of life."
"I read this book in preparation for a mission trip to Ecuador in fall 2004. This is a nice book explaining the importance and significance of missions work."
""Missions exists because worship doesn't," writes Piper. All believers have a responsibility to fulfill Christ's Great Commission in reaching all people groups on the planet (Mt 28:19-20). Will I go across a culture or ocean with the gospel? Or, will I support others in some way who are taking the gospel to the unreached? Or will I disobey God? This book will stir your heart for reaching the peoples of the world with the gospel, but it will do much more than that. This book will help you understand God's plan for the planet and your role in it. A thorough and biblical theology of missions."
