"I really enjoyed the story and illustrations by dePaola. He retells an Native American legend about a boy named Little Gopher who wants to become a warrior. However during his coming of age ceremony, two spirits appear to him and tell him to become a painter instead and wait for the day when he can paint the colors of the sky. He paints scenes of great hunts, deeds and dream-visions, while he keeps trying and failing to paint the colors of the sky at dawn. After awhile, he hears a voice tell him that he will be rewarded and when he awakes he finds brushes with the exact color of the sky growing out of the ground. Once he paints his masterpiece, flowers in the colors of his discarded paintbrushes pop up and Little Gopher is renamed He-Who-Brought-the-Sunset-to-the-Earth. Recommended for ages 4-7."
"This is a great story, but my favorite thing to do with this book is simply look at the pictures. Beautiful and bold, it leaves me feeling good about the day."
"As an example of Native American mythology, this is a beautiful, moving book. It holds valuable lessons for pagan children as well. It is a teary, wonderful coming-of-age story.
Little Gopher isn't good at the things the other tribe boys are. He doesn't fit in and doesn't feel valuable. The Divine comes to visit him and to bestow upon him an understanding of what his unique gifts are and how he can use those gifts in life to better the lives of those around him. He works hard, follows the Divine advice he received, and becomes something of a hero to his tribe.
A sample of the sort of wise gems this book holds includes the following advice from the tribe's shaman to the boy, who wants very much to be like the other boys:
"Do not struggle, Little Gopher. Your path will not be the same as the others. They will grow up to be warriors. Your place among the People will be remembered for a different reason.""
