"I had heard this book referenced a number of times recently, so when it showed up at the bottom of a box of books given to me by some friends, I snatched it up! Only 70 pages long, this book may be a short read, but it is not an easy read - at least not for me! I think I need to read it several more times before I can fully comprehend it. Nevertheless, I found it incredibly enlightening and amazingly relevant to our times and our society. There are many little nuggets of wisdom to be gleaned from the pages to bring about a greater understanding of the purpose of law and the proper function of government."
"Brilliant! It is amazing how that which is moral and ethical can stand the test of time. This could have been written yesterday and still ring just as true. Bastiat states that "The law is the organization of the natural right of lawful defense." He presents the argument that any other use of law is a perversion and is nothing more than legal plunder. He says that it is human nature to want "to live and prosper at the expense of others", so "it is easy to understand how law, instead of checking injustice, becomes the invincible weapon of injustice". Towards the end of the book it starts to get a little boring because he is mostly talking about current events in France at the time, but none the less he masterfully presents a moral argument against socialism that is as true as ever. Unfortunately, people don't seemed to be swayed by moral arguments against socialism, only practical arguments."
"This very short book is a very powerful treatise in favor of natural law, the free market, capitalism, the private sector, and limited government. Refutes the ideas of socialism very quickly and easily. Its very easy to understand and does not take long to read at all. Every US legislator should have to read this book. Next to the constitution and declaration of independence, it is the most important book in america"
"The Law explains what law should be and the proper role of government. I went through a variety of emotions while reading this book, fear, anger and mourning for the loss of our republic. I am finally getting the education to know what to do about it and I am excited!
The principles found in this short book are also found in Skousen's 5000 Year Leap and Benson's Proper Role of Government. In fact, both authors quote Bastiat.
Concisely, law should only only protect our life, libery and property. That's it. Yikes, how far we have come! It was weird to keep thinking that Bastiat was French and was writing this in 1848!"
