"I've read this book three times, once on my own and two separate times to my sons, (with a little verbal editing). It is a great adventure story and unlike any other Louis L'Amour book. A pilot of Eskimo descent is shot down over the middle of Russia and has to rely on the underground and living off the land to make his way back to the Bering Strait Sea and home to Alaska."
"I reviewed this book for the 'Bookin' it' book club. I have a complete set of Louis L'Amour books, but this is one of my favorite. I never have to wonder who is the good person and who is the bad, because it's quite clear. Learned a lot about Soviet topography, especially the area of Siberia. Learned how people live there, etc. The book was well written, as are all of his. I read this to my husband who was bedridden in a hospital, and when I'd leave for the night and come back the next morning, he'd remind me where our 'hero' was and what was going on, and I'd read more."
"When you think of Louis L'Amour you probably think "Western." But this story takes you on a trek across Siberia with an American pilot who goes back to his roots as a Native American while trying to escape from nasty Russians who shot him down for classified info. I have read this book at least 10 times over the last however many years and it always keeps me on the edge of my seat!"
"L'Amour stepped out of his comfort zone of writing Westerns and tried to write a Cold War story. It doesn't feel like most Cold War stories and maybe that is a good thing. This story deals heavily with the people who live in Siberia, one of the coldest places on Earth. It revolves around a Native American Air Force officer who is trying to escape from the USSR, through Siberia. Not a bad story."
