"This is one of the earlier Connelly books in the Harry Bosch series that I've had but never got around to reading. I liked it but it wasn't as polished as the more recent ones. It does give some back ground on Bosch and his relationship with his prostitute mother as he sets out to finally discover the mystery behind her murder some 30 years earlier."
"In this book Bosch sets out to find the person who killed his mother over 30 years ago. I really enjoyed this book. You get to see another side of Harry Bosch, the scared young boy, the lonely heart and the cop that always gets the job done. No matter the cost.
"I liked the idea that main character Harry Bosch's formal name is Hieronymus. I liked the plot device of getting to know, in part, the thought process of Bosch, a suspended cop, by going through his mandatory counseling sessions. Thought it a little weird that the supervisor cop that Bosch doesn't like gets killed, in effect, by Bosch -- mainly that when it happens, Bosch doesn't seem too torn up about it. i.e., Bosch illicitly uses Pounds'badge and I.D. number to obtain confidential info during the time that Bosch is sidelined fr. the force. Perhaps stagey - that Bosch falls in live w. a woman who is herself a killer, tho in self defense during domestic violence. Seemed very weird that Bosch is willing at end to relocate to Florida, where the woman lives. Made me wonder whether Bosch is just a one-book character, rather than the hero in a series."
"This book was my introduction to Michael Connelly. I enjoyed reading about Harry Bosch. So much so that I went on to read the Brass Verdict which I will add to my list. This book left me constantly thinking I knew who was responsible and still at the very end was wrong..."
