"Marie's tales are a ton of fun and quite a bit interesting as well. This edition, though it contains endnotes and a few footnotes, is mostly concerned with interpreting (which are mostly good, though general in scope)."
"I came across this book quite by chance, and it was an exciting, if quick, read. This collection gathers all twelve of the lais of Marie de France, the songs themselves originating from the Breton area of Frankia and presented in a new and purportedly more accurate translation. These twelve prose fairy tales include most of the well-known aspects of medieval storytelling: the handsome knight in armor, the damsel in distress, enchanted swords, the whims of Fortune, ensorcelled and hidden kingdoms, courtly love, power and ambition, ethereal Seelie courts, and even a clever werewolf. My favourite lai of the collection was the opener, "Guigemar." Those in adoration of the Arthurian mythos will be delighted by the "Lanval" story, which includes a supporting appearance by Sir Gawain and a mention of the isle of Avalon.
Not much is known of Marie de France's life history, apart from speculation that she was born in France in the late 12th century and then lived in Britain. Some speculators claim that these twelve lais were not written by a woman at all, but a man, and that some of the twelve lais were composed by other authors. Indeed, this type of rampant speculation occurs with any great work. Some examples of disputed authorship and identity of the writer are The Odyssey and the requisite Homeric Question that comes along with it, and Shakespeare's own works. However, all twelve lais are consistent with each other, and hold up to the idea of one author, since they each incorporate a unique formula that remains uniform throughout. The disputation over authorship and gender of the author just testifies to the importance and brilliance of the work itself.
This book is highly recommended, especially the Penguin Classics translation. It is a real treat, and anyone who has ever dreamt of medieval times will find page after page of delight."
