"Whoa! Not quite sure how to comment about this novel? I wanted to read it mainly because of the title and figured it would have 'something' to do with dogs! Not to be, well, unless you count the strays hanging around underneath the house next door to Effie.
I think the author was attempting to be "quirky and original" but somehow lost his way. The characters were quite eccentric and the one I got the most kick out of was Effie. A 71-year-old snoopy, antique dealer who has had a store on Worth Row for many years. Her daily journal entries of everyone else's comings, goings and doings sound like an ongoing soap opera! These neighbourhood folks have more secrets than most any people I know.
However, as compelled as I was to finish this novel, it is certainly not high on my list of recommendations. I usually have a hard time giving a novel a 'low' rating but, this one has forced my hand!!"
"If I would have read this book before Beach Combing for a Shipwrecked God I don't know if I would have become an instant Joe Coomer fan. Apologizing to Dogs is good, but I think it suffers from a glut of characters. Instead of focusing on the stories of a compact, tight-knit group of characters (like Beach Combing) we are expected to follow the storylines of an entire neighborhood of people, pretty much all of which are antique dealers of one kind or another, which makes it even harder to keep straight who is who and why they act as they do. Lots of secrets, histories and inner turmoil in this neighborhood, too. Pared down to the stories of maybe half a dozen of these people, Dogs might have been fully successful. As it stands, it's a good read and I was even genuinely moved a time or two, but I'm still looking forward to the next Coomer book, hoping he'll pull off another genius work like Beach Combing."
