"If you believe life is a marriage of pieces of individual cloths sown into a greater tapestry, this book has several short stories all around the same area that creates an enjoyable glimpse into all the levels of a community"
"Welcome to post-Civil War Spain; this book is great and was banned throughout Europe years ago. Cela weaves over 100 characters in but you won't get lost, this is an experienced writer who knows how to lead the reader. Brilliant...astounding...those descriptions work well. Read it."
"I gave up the Spanish edition and read the Norwegian instead - too many characters, too confusing in Spanish. (But I liked the Spanish movie, with Cela himself as an inventor de palabras. Does that count?)
Reading it in Norwegian was a mistake, by the way. It's translated by Norway's most overrated translator, Kjell Risvik."
"If I may be so crass as to compare the narrative of a Nobel laureate with a popular movie, it reminded me of Pulp Fiction: The Hive is made up of hundreds of short sections (many less than a page), not all of which are told in order, most of which are quite dark, and many of which are left unresolved. There are so many characters that it is sometimes difficult to keep them all straight until a detail jogs one's memory.
If there is one message that stuck in my mind from this book, it is that the poverty of Madrid in the 1940s drove many young women to prostitution. One aged prostitute also complains about the loose young women who do it for free, and thus take "the bread from the mouths of others."
Although there are many characters, the final chapter focuses on Martin Marco. I did not understand the ending: if I were more familiar with Franco's regime, would I understand why Marco was wanted by the police? Was it because he had been recognized, yet unable to produce his papers the night before? Or is it meant to end on such a mysterious note?"
