About this title: "The Kuzari "is one of the basic books of Jewish literature, a required text in the library of every educated Jew--and of every educated Christian who would understand the religion of Israel. The author, foremost poet and thinker of the Jewish Middle Ages, offers clear and usable delineations of the religion of Israel. "This is a translation from the Arabic of the work of an early 12th century scholar and physician. Caught in the vise of the intolerant Christians and the Alamorivides, the intolerant Muslims, Halevi forged an argument for the legitimacy, if not the more authentic, faith of the Jews. But the heat of the oppression of the Christians and the extremist Mulims was such that he felt himself compelled, thougjh born in Toledo, Spain, to move to the Land of Israel, then Palestine. There he was able to finish his argument and book. He makes a convincing argument. The reader should remember that he or she is reading the thoughts directly from the early 12th century. The reader will learn that not that much has changed in human concerns since the 12th century. She or he will also learn that oppression knows no date."
