About this title: The Prophet Mathias (Robert Matthews) was the leader of one of the most bizarre religious cults in 1830s America, in New York City. Within three years of the founding of the cult, he found himself the subject of America's first major newspaper scandal, a drama involving not just religious fanaticism but sexual depravity and homicide as well. This study reveals much about class, religious attitudes, sexual practices, and social tension in the USA in the 1830s.
