"Very enjoyable read of this dark, conflicted future where the children of super humans have multiplied to the point where they've overrun and displaced the authority of humans in governing the world. Great read and stunning graphics that are, at times, so full and complex it's hard to catch everything's that going on.
A fantastic response to Watchmen if you're into the ideological conversation going on in the world of comic books."
"The handful of times I've read this book always bring to mind the real weakness of Alex Ross, the sole reason I even read this: he's a talented, if static, comic artist who is rarely given a legitimately good book to illustrate. First off, I have to say I remain a sucker for Ross' art. I think it's lovely to look at, if utterly impersonal and largely lacking in any actual Style. When he hit the comics scene back in the 1990s, it was just nice to see such handsome work in superhero books, so none of us complained. This far down the road, though, his art merely seems the perfect counterpart for the books he continues to do: superhero comics, albeit generally more 'serious' ones, but still just superhero comics. What remains a major charm in his art is to pick out cameos and little in-jokes in the background...and even that gets a little tiring. Oh, yeah, and Mark Waid. Well, he's a superhero writer, and this reads like a superhero book. Nobody speaks naturally, motivations are explained ad nauseam and narration (such as it is) is stilted and prosaic (although it serves its purpose in this case). Not a great book, but very pretty if you like that sort of thing. This edition's Apocrypha section is nice, but more worthwhile for the key to the cover images than anything else."
"I've just finished Kingdom Come, a graphic novel featuring the heroes of DC Comics. I've never read anything like it before, and wouldn't have picked it up if it hadn't been recommended to me. The illustrations by the amazing Alex Ross are extraordinary and make reading the book a cinematic experience - this is truly a comic book for adults. It was a fantastic leap into another world - reading and film combined."
"Set in the future of the DC Universe, most of the old generation of superheroes have retired and have been replaced by a newer and more violent breed. When Kansas is irradiated and rendered uninhabitable by their antics, Superman comes out of retirement and reforms the Justice League to police these new heroes.
However, in the attempt to restore order, the Justice League begins to trample over the very freedoms they are trying to protect. This is a familiar theme in comic books, I can't call Kingdom Come the most original story. Still, between the amazing artwork by Alex Ross and the sense of grandeur imparted by Mark Waid's storytelling, this story has never been told better."
