"Stumbled across this series from a friend's tweet and loved it. Part spy novel, part education on Jewish cultural issues (and in later books, terrorism and Russia), I plowed through all nine books in the series in fairly short order, enjoying each of them.
However, the books are extremely formulaic and the last two in the series feel a bit tired. But... fun nonetheless."
"Excellent; Continuing character: Gabriel Allon (first in series); former Israeli agent turned art restorer is pulled back into the spy business to track down the terrorist who murdered his family years ago."
"could definitely tell it was the first of the allon series as silva is trying to figure out each character. with the book written without a sequel (or 8!) anticipated, i don't think silva put enough thought into the long term qualities of each character."
"It took me a while to get into this book, but once I did I had a hard time putting it down. What attracts me to the main character, Gabriel Allon, is that he is a fine art restorer that works for the Mossad as an assassin. Gabriel does not have to think when he kills, but there is an obvious negative effect on him after each killing. He is very sensitive to those he is working with. Gabriel's wife was badly hurt and his son killed in a car bomb meant for him. In one section Gabriel visits his wife that left me feeling sad for him and his family. He replays the bombing a number of times throughout the story. As a consequence he questions why he is still working for the Israelis. He lives in Europe and has plenty work to do with art restoration. However, the head of the Mossad has a strong pull over Gabriel to keep him working for him. I enjoy the art history that is covered in the book. I hope Daniel Silva does him homework, because I do not have time to chase down the art references."
