About this title: IDW is proud to introduce a new line of graphic novels that adapt some of the best-loved books of all-time. First up is Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book". In the Seeonee hills, a camp has just been plundered. The only creatures who are still alive are a naked little boy and Shere Khan, the ruthless tiger. Just as Shere Khan is about to pounce on the man cub, he steps on the embers of a campfire and is rooted to the spot with pain. The child takes advantage of the opportunity to escape and arrives in front of a cave where he is taken in by a family of wolves. Soon Shere Khan arrives to claim ...

"This one was difficult for me to get through, I know it is considered a classic but I really had to fight to get through the stories. The adventures int he beginning with the man cub and tiger were more palatable and easier to follow and half ways enjoy which is why I gave two stars instead of one. This ranks up there as a least favorite among my collection.
The one thing I did find interesting was how much the Disney cartoon went away from the story and their departure from the essence of the characters... would have been a different cartoon had they represented the stories faithfully."
"The Jungle Book consists of 7 short stories about animals, 3 of which make up the plot of the Disney film.
The Jungle Book's 3 stories are very different from the Disney movie, and in my view a much better read. Mowgli is taken in by a family of wolves, and accepted into the clan. Baloo then teaches him the Law of the Jungle, with Mowgli getting kidnapped by the apes, in the process. Bagheera and Baloo enlist the help of Kaa, who saves them from the apes and rescues Mowgli, a very different Kaa from the bad guy of the film.
Akela is then deposed from leadership of the wolves, and Mowgli is outcast to the human village, where he learns the ways of Man. As he herds buffalo for the village, he learns that Sher Khan has returned to hunt him, whereby he causes his buffalo to stampede, and killing Sher Khan. Kipling's nudge to the colonial and class-based views of the time is entertaining, although younger readers may miss it.
The fourth of the stories, "The White Seal", is a great story about a seal with a unique white coat, that wants to find new beaches for the seals to live on. This story has some parallels with the Jungle Book story, for example the Law of the Jungle becomes the Law of the Beach.
The fifth story, "Rikki Tikki Tavi", is about a mongoose who catches snakes. The story charts his adventures as he kills two Cobras and saves a human family in the process.
The penultimate story, "Toomai of the Elephants", is a gripping read about an boy and an elephant who see an elephant dance. A great half-hour read for a rainy afternoon!
The final story is "Her Majesty's Servants", and consists of a conversation between talking animals in the service of the Indian Army. This is the least known story, and also the only one seen from a first-person point of view.
This classic collection of stories, all about animals, is certainly a must-read. Readers of 12 and over should appreciate this staple of childrens classic literature."
"No this is not your Disney movie - Kipling wrote a fantastic series of short stories, only a few of which include Mowgli. Baloo is not a lazy idiot, Kaa is not a bad guy, SherKahn is killed rather then run off, the wolves are not always the noble good guys... this is VERY different then our cotton candy Disney film. And so much more enjoyable for it.
Also included are the tales of Rikki Tikki Tavi, the Elephant Dance, and the White Seal. I would have to say that my favorite is Rikki Tikki Tavi, he's just so loveable and wonderful. There is a sense of magic in Kiplings animals, every reader will find themselves dreaming of being raised by wolves and taught the law of the jungle by Baloo.
I know that this was written as a children's book - but I have a hard time believing that my 11 year old son would be able to read and enjoy it, the beauty of the language will be lost on many of the younger readers who are used to the forward speaking newer YA books. But I would assume that by middle school they should be able to fully enjoy it."
