"In reading the first fifty pages or so of this book, I thought I found the McCullough weak link. Boy, I couldn't have been more wrong.
The book started slow, for me, but in retrospect it put me into the mindset of the people in the area of Johnstown: taking normal days and events and thinking they were uneventful. And then the author started to build the flood and unleashed it. Wow! My heart was pounding as I turned the pages (not fast enough) to follow the sequence of disaster and tragedy.
Quite unlike the others titles of his that I've read, thus far, (THE PATH BETWEEN THE SEAS, JOHN ADAMS, and TRUMAN) in THE JOHNSTOWN FLOOD I appreciated many "ordinary" folks, questioned others' motives and attitudes, and felt as if I'd gone through the flood itself.
For me, watching similar disasters on television or in a film doesn't capture what David McCullough was able to recreate because you usually see the end results. Mr. McCullough takes you down the river in a tormented stream, and I felt the bruises afterward."
"I struggled alot with this book. It is so hard for me to grab onto names and places, especially when there are alot of them. Kev kept telling me to stick it out. I'm glad I did. For me, I could have done without all the town set-up in the first 50 or so pages, and just went to the story of the flood. After I was done the book, I was then able to read those first pages and grab onto them a little better.
Great visuals from the author. I thought there would have been waaayyy more casualties. Good book, horrible situation."
"This book was an airport buy and an airplane read. It was one of McCullough's first books ever written (1953?), and includes some pretty remarkable first-hand accounts from survivors of the 1889 flood. The details are amazing for obviously no footage of the flood and few quality pictures. After reading this book, I have secret desires to fly to Pittsburgh and take a train to visit the site of the great flood."
"I listened to this book while we were traveling to and from Nauvoo. Very interesting. David McCullough can make anything interesting I think. What did I learn from it . . . 1 - the goodness in people that can be found amidst tragedy 2- the futility and sadness that is found in finger-pointing, fault-finding and long-term grudge-holding and law suits. This tragic event (and I think many tragic situations) have a myriad of causes and many people involved - there is beauty in forgiveness and great ugliness in resentment. 3 - The danger in the diffusion of responsibility - everyone thinking someone else is 'taking care of it'. 4 - The importance of recognizing when I am 'out of my league'. Making sure the 'experts' (i.e. qualified engineers in this case) take care of situations when experts are called for. 5 - Seeking out accurate information and data during emergencies - and using my own judgment and not the judgment of a crowd to make decisions"
