"The Gilbreth family is made up of a dad who thinks he can raise the children like they are working in a factory, a mom who supports her husband, and last but not least 12 children. Mr. Gilbreth always takes the kids everywhere he goes, even on business trips and he always stands up for his family in any type of situation. With 12 kids you would think there would be a lot of chaos. One of the things Mr. Gilbreth does to make sure the kids do not get out of hand is that he has family assemblies by blowing a whistle. Once the whistle was blown everyone had to stop what they were doing and come immediately. Sometimes these assemblies were for handing out gifts, and sometimes they were for handing out punishments, but everyone made sure to come as fast as possible just in case. This came in handy when the house caught fire, everyone evacuated in 14 seconds.
The Gilbreth family is really like any other family in the world except they have 12 children. I can relate to the family because whenever I do something wrong our whole family has a meeting and we talk about it together. Even on holidays like Christmas, we all spend the day together opening presents just like the Gilbreth's. Some people might not agree with their life style but at the end of the day we are just like them.
I loved reading Cheaper By the Dozen by, Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey because it shows what a family has to go through raising 12 kids and how hard it can be. This book was hilarious to read but at times it left you hanging and made you want to read more. The Gilbreth's work as a team to get things done and at the end of the day are blessed to have one another."
"I think this is,and can only be, Esther Forbe's best book. justly famous--it won the Newberry Medal-- it gives a vivid picture of life in Boston during the American Civil War. The characters are so alive they make you feel like you would know them by sight on the street. And the story itself is gripping, captivating; the plot well woven. It gives me such a thrill to see Johnny's growth and maturity from the cocky, smart, arrogant, likable but shallow boy into a 'real man'; as if I knew him personally. Her humor is dry,spontaneous--and irresistable! Its very real portayal of war, with all its glory and gore, has both sides revealed as just ordinary,flesh-and-blood people-- Lieutenant Stranger and Johnny are so much alike, and one wants them so much to be friends!; but on opposite sides and so enemies-- only with different ideals. it captures the harsh beauty of war, with poignant pithiness in every sentance; the grief, with Rab's death and that of the others so cruelly and yet so neccessarily sacrificed;the grief of those left behind, like Johnny;and the memorable effects on them , their country, countrymen, and history."
"Is this book the finest example of historical fiction to have ever been written for young readers? If not, I would certainly put it right up there near the top of the list. "Johnny Tremain" is, in every purest, best sense of the word, a classic book that holds appeal to everyone who has an appreciation for truly Great (with a capital "G") literature. The sheer force of magnitude that drives the historical narrative outdistances all rivals, making the reader feel as if he is becoming a crucial and unalterable part of the American Revolution itself. I know of nothing else that so magnificently reflects the attitudes and times of pre-war Colonial America, and viewing these romantic scenes through the eyes of the spirited and brave (but also flawed, and capable of being identified with by normal people because of his vulnerability) Johnny Tremain made him the best choice possible for a lead character, I think. The emotions and philosophies and uncertainties and patriotic duties of the time (and, in a sense, of all times) swirl together in the pages of this unforgettable story, forming into a plot that is nearly impossible to predict, and highly significant in what it eventually becomes. "Johnny Tremain" is one of the few greatest books that I have ever read, and readers for decades past and decades into the future (and probably much, much longer) will continue to be profoundly affected by the story of an apprentice iron worker in Boston, and the ways in which his life and the lives of those around him affect the American Revolution."
"I hated this book!!!! if u read this book you will become boring and old! this book pulls you into a wrinkled old time of so-called "action"!!! i could have found more action by going to a retirement home and watching the 900 year old people play bingo!!!!!! i of course was forced against my will to read this, otherwise, i wouldnt go spitting distance of it!!!! if you enjoyed this book (mr.flegar) then you are boring old!! do not read this thing! it's a plague! save yourselves!!!!!!!!"
