"This was different than I expected - Jane both is and isn't LMM's typical heroine. It sufficiently mixed up the usual plot, too, for the most part. My biggest issue was that Jane was pretty much perfect - she was kind and good and could cook, garden, budget and keep house the moment she tried to do these things. And let's not forget the lion. It was pretty weird reading a "modern" time, too - mid1930s is much later than most of her other stories, and it threw me a few times. I liked Jane well enough, but what won me over was her father...oh, he was brilliant. LMM's male characters pretty much always pale to her female, but not Drew. He was a genuine delight. And I did warm up to Jane (especially when she only started to like her cousin because her cousin showed weakness - that was a very real, and funny, scene). I liked it more than three stars worth, but it's nowhere near my favorites. I may try to buy a used copy, though. (NOT with Sam Waterston on the cover! I can't imagine him as Andrew, blech.)"
"Pride and Prejudice is definitely Jane Austen's most-read classic, just as Anne of Green Gables is L.M. Montgomery's. Not that I don't love P&P, and I would think it sacrilege to swerve in my loyalty to Anne, but both authors have hidden gems that secretly have place among my favorites. For Austen, it's Persuasion. For Montgomery, it's Jane of Lantern Hill.
I fell in love with Jane the first time I read this book when I was a teen. It never fails to disappoint. Jane is a wonderful character who is able to find her true self in an unanticipated way.
This book is out of print now, but I found a copy at a used bookstore. You may want to try your library, too. You won't regret any wasted time after having read this book."
"This is a gentle story, told from the point of view of young Jane Victoria. She lives with her sweet but rather fluffy mother, and her extremely strict grandmother. She's an imaginative, dreamy child who feels unhappy and restricted, and often finds herself in trouble. Then a letter arrives which totally changes Jane's life...
The style is a bit wordy, with some descriptive passages which I skimmed. But overall it's an enjoyable, gentle story with a predictable but satisfying ending."
