About this title: The 'fatal charm of Italy' has held Lord Byron - and millions of tourists ever since - in its spell. Yet, beneath 'the brilliant and vivacious surface', what are the realities of Italian life? Few writers have ever painted a portrait of their compatriots as crisp, frank and fearless as Luigi Barzini's. Cutting through the familiar cliches, he ...

"This is a great book. Written in 1964 by an Italian politician, he pulls no punches. He puts all that has happended in Italy for the last hundreds of years in perspective. He gives his own views on why Italy is the way it is, why it is incapable of being a world leader, and also why at the same time so many folks are drawn to it. A must read for anyone intending to visit Italy, but even if not this book is still a very interesting read on Italian history. One very interesting chapter on Siicily and the Mafia leads me to be believe that the author of The Godfather studied this book before writing that novel."
"This is a terrific book, so useful and interesting to those of us who LOVE Italy and the Italians, but who are often completely puzzled by them! He delves into their history and psychology in a humorous, respectful, and even-handed way, not shying away from or avoiding the many inconsistencies and contradictions in their character!"
