"This book was nothing like the second movie at all. In fact I think there were only three things from the book that were in the movie and even then, the way they happened in the movie was different. I thought this was fantastic because the second movie wasn't as good as the first, but the second book was just as wonderful as the first book. Nakyla enjoyed the book also, but more because she liked that on the cover Anne is holding flowers so we had to take turns with the book. She always likes to hold a book from the series while I'm reading to her."
"When I began my re-read of this, I thought that I would end up giving it 3 stars. In my memory, the book was a string of episodes with a much too poetically precocious Paul. But Montgomery brings meaning to these episodes and shows how Anne grows and how Avonlea changes during Anne's two years as schoolmarm. Paul is still too much for my tastes and I do wish Montgomery had given Dora *some* personality. I'm sure she wanted to contrast her against Davy, but that doesn't meant that poor Dora has to be a little Stepford child.
I hadn't remembered that Anne wears no colors for the two years after Matthew's death, but that doesn't stop Montgomery from making me envy all those muslin dresses Anne and Diana wear. And how about this simple line that I wish I could incorporate into my conversations: "...there were nights when Anne could not sleep for wondering whether she had done right in advising Miss Lavendar to select brown rather than navy blue for her traveling dress, and to have her gray silk made princess."
Best line, though, belongs to Mrs. Lynde who sums up Mrs. Cotton perfectly with, "She washes her dishes sitting down."
I won this copy in a summer reading library program. Is now the time to confess that I still want to pronounce it "uh-VON-lee-uh" instead of "A-von-lee?""
"you know i love all the anne of green gables books, i guess i somehow relate to anne a little and feel a connection on an inner - child kinda level when i read it. i think that maybe back at the turn of the century (these books were written in 1908) there seemed to be a lot of orphans (maybe due to depression times or war times or whatever)... but i've noticed that you'd be very unlucky being a curly red headed girl in the early 1900's - coz there were an awful lot of curly red headed girl orphans!! anne with an e, was one of the more lucky orphans who found a happy home! ok and as for the book - AWESOME! rather slow and anticlimatic, in this age of instant gratification - but so lovely. anne of avonlea doesnt wander off into anne's imaginings as often as book one did,but is a lovely rounding out of her childhood years. i wonder as i read these books if perhaps l.m. montgomery may just be writing from personal experiences, as she explains so well the thoughts and dreamings and musings that anne's brain daily trips along. i dont know how she captured those thoughts so well in a book, but i love the way the text includes anne's flights of fancy .... it reminds me of how i think, and i am glad other people think like that too, and that someone could write it down in a book! overall iloved this book also, ad am glad i read it again!"
"I'm listening to the audio, and I can already tell I won't like it as much as the Anne of Green Gables audio I just finished. They have different readers.
I grew to appreciate the reader of this audio as I got further into it. But I was really bothered by the Miss Lavender storyline. When I read this book as a child, I remember thinking like Anne-It's so romantic!!!1!!!!1!! But now, I don't even agree with Gilbert. It's creepy. She's somewhat mentally disturbed!
Also, it really isn't fair that everyone likes Davy better than Dora. Being good doesn't mean she has to be boring!!! Gah! Honestly, I really did enjoy the book a lot, I'm just focusing more on the things I know bugged me. Still, I will definitely continue the series."
